OVERVIEW

Student athletes in the Red Lion School District in York, PA, started the 2024 school year with a new multi-use sports field in Horn Stadium! In August, 135,000-square-feet of A-Turf Titan DiamondBlade™ was installed to accommodate the football, baseball, field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse teams that play there.

KEY CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

Red Lion School District first began working with A-Turf in 2011, when they installed stadium turf at Horn Field. However, after enduring 14 seasons of use, it was time to replace this turf with a new system. The school district reached out to A-Turf again, who brought in 135,000 square-feet of Titan DiamondBlade to place over the existing ShockPad. Unique to the baseball field, a dirt mound was also installed, but turf covers home plate, first, second, and third bases. This was a COSTARS project.

COSTARS is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s cooperative purchasing program, and serves as a conduit through which registered and eligible Pennsylvania local public procurement units and Pennsylvania state-affiliated entities can leverage contracts established by the Department of General Services to identify suppliers cost-effectively and efficiently with whom to do business.

One of the things that made this project unique is that the original project team from the 2011 project was utilized again in 2024. The DiamondBlade turf was installed by the same installers and included the former project manager and sales representative. This continuity ensured an elevated level of expertise and familiarity with the site’s unique requirements. In addition to the old turf being removed, the site was regraded to ensure a smooth and even surface before the ShockPad was re-laid and the DiamondBlade turf was placed on top of it.
